In a mild contemplation, the author once thought: why did the writings of the early scholars endure so much of their existence and usefulness in this digital age?
Borrowing the term world of bookkeeping today, the work of scholars arguably bestseller centuries and across generations.
In fact, they write on average manually (not as sophisticated as now that many printing machines). Interestingly, with its perfunctory tools, it does not prevent them from being productive in issuing papers.
For example, who does not know the great scholar of Ibnu Jarir At-Thabari’s class? In the historical record, essays amounted to 358 thousand pieces. When calculated, in a day he was able to write as many as 40 sheets (Abdu al-Fattah, Qīmatu al-Zaman `Inda al-`Ulamā, 43).
Not to mention, the cleric of Imam Ibn Jauzi who abandoned the work of five hundred books; and many other examples.
After reading Imam Bukhari’s biography and several other scholars, my writer’s curiosity began to be solved. Most Muslims are no stranger to a figure like Imam Bukhari known through his Shahih. A monumental hadith book agreed upon by scholars as the most valid book of the hadith in the world.

Many who know the magnum opusnya this, however, do they know how the process of writing scholars of hadith whose level is called Amîr al-Mu`minîn fî al-Hadîts this?
Imam Adz-Dzahabi in Târîkh al-Islâm wa Wafayât al-Masyâhir wa al-A’lâm (1413: I / 74) took note of the process of writing the hadith of Imam Bukhari. Book entitled al-Jâmi ‘al-Musnad al-Shahîh al-Mukhtashar min Umûri Rasûlullah sallallaahu’ alaihi wasallam wa Sunanihi wa Ayyâmihi was written beginning from the dream of meeting the prophet.
At that time, Bukhari seemed to be carrying a fan to protect the prophet from all distractions so that the prophet could sleep soundly.
The tomb of Imam al-Bukhari in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, is always visited by Muslims worldwide
When asked to the scholar about takwil his dream, its meaning: Bukhari became the defender of the Prophet. Therefore, he needs to write a paper to keep the hadiths of the prophet from the reports of lies.
From here, what can be learned from Bukhari is noble motive before writing and know the true quality of the content to be written. He wrote not just writing, but has a great intention of defending the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam. A valuable note for anyone who wants to become a writer.
Furthermore, according to Imam Adz-Dzahabi in Siyar A’lâm al-Nubalâ (1405: XII / 402), it is narrated that Imam Bukhari wrote his Shahih, strictly selected from the sahih hadith which amounted to about six hundred thousand. It’s fantastic.
Of the amount of 600 thousand it dikerucutkan to about 7563 hadith. You can imagine how he has a strong memory and rich data. If it is spoken in the present term perhaps: write with a rigorous editing process and enriched with data.

More than that, some are quite astonishing from Imâm Bukhârî before starting to write the book. One day Al-Firabry was told by Imam Bukhari about the process of writing his monumental book, that every time he would write a hadeeth he showered and performed the two-raked sunnah (istikharah) prayer (Imam Adz-Dzahabi, 1405: XII / 402).
You can imagine how much and how long he completed this book if the hadith in it is about 7563.
From here the readers can learn that the name of the writing is not just writing, but dilatari by the spirit of worship dam and there is a spirit. In writing, Imam Bukhari always involves Allah Subhanahu Wata’ala, not merely relying on intelligence alone.
In history, not only Bukhari is practicing this. Suppose: Imam An-Nawawi, before writing the monumental master Majmu ‘Syarh al-Muhaddzab, he performed the istikharah prayer first.
Similarly Ibn Hazm Al-Andalusiy, istikharah prayer first before writing his book entitled al-Muhalla bi al-Âtsâr. Even Imam Adz-Dzahabi, do not forget to pray istikharah first before writing syarah from the book of Ihyâ ‘Ulum al-Dîn by Bukhari (Muhammad Abu Ayyas, 2008: 73-77)
Then, the question is: did Imam Bukhari work on this great work without the teacher’s service? Imam Ibn Al-Jawzi in the book of al-Muntadham fî Târikh al-Mulûk wa al-Umam (1412: XII / 115) explains that the scholars of hadith scholars from Bukhara wrote the hadith came from a thousand shaykhs or teachers.
Imagine to write the hadith of his teacher amounted to a thousand. The lesson to be learned here, writing it takes teacher guidance.
Furthermore, that is not less interesting, the Book of Sahih is written in a period of sixteen years. Imam Bukhari also makes this book as hujjah (proof) between himself and Allah Subhanahu wata’ala (Abu Muhammad Al-Yafi’i, Mirâh al-Ji
That is, to get the best papers, not the important origin so, but really through the seriousness, patience, and quality. In everyday life, if we want to harvest corn, it may take two to three months. But, if you want to harvest teak trees, can be decades. The price is obviously more expensive teak.
Finally, from Imam Bukhari the reader can learn that if you want to carve a great paper, there are at least five points to note:
First, have the intention and noble motive in writing as well as understand well the quality of content to be written.
Second, selective and rich data. Third, instill internal awareness that writing is worship, because it will be accountable, and supervised by Allah Subhanahu Wata’ala. Not just a masterpiece for dashing.
Fourth, the guidance of a teacher (especially the worship and noble morality).
Fifth, quality work is not the origin of so, but it takes patience, patience and time not for a while.
What about us? Do we become writers or journalists with the guidance of revelation and intention because Allah is ta’ala or merely a dash to be publicly praised?
Perhaps this is the difference between our work and the work of the scholars. The average work of the general public only survives and is remembered for a year or two. While the work of the scholars is timeless, it has even been studied by millions for centuries. While from his book, able to give birth to scholars and scholars who berakhlaq. Wallahua’lam.
